Edited by: Elondris Singh on 24/06/2011 05:59:26 Alright.
I feel that this post is going to be buried rapidly. I care not. I feel it important, amid the flood of large yellow quotes, demands, and declarations of losing subscribers, to at least make a token attempt at making by voice heard.
I'm fairly new to the game. I have about 13million SP, and now that I can fly a marauder and a hulk, things are just starting to get really interesting to me. The idea of going into low-sec is starting to be NOT scary to me, and I've met some cool people. I mention this to avoid being lumped into the "bitvet" blanket that seems to be tossed about by some subscribers, and potentially some members of CCP.
Obviously, by posting here, I have a few concerns. Some of which seem to be shared by the majority of people voicing theirs, loudly or softly - and a few others that I feel have been glazed over or brushed off by many. C'est la vie. My post. My declaration. Let us get into it.
The Newsletter: I can understand wanting to get discussion going amongst the devs. It's a good thing. It's a fantastic thing. However: the tone speaks not to "how can we improve the game" but "how can we make money". I get you're a corporation. Yes, I get that your bottom line is in fact to make money. I feel that the newsletter speaks as to the nature of your methods. I read that newsletter and everything I've ever heard on the podcasts or the devblogs about "we want to make the best simulator ever" get's hung on the coatrack in favor of the newsletters "we want to increase our profit margin."
The Noble Exchange: I don't mind the idea of a separate market interface for avatar items. that's fine. Less clutter on the part's market? cool. I could stand to see Boosters and Implants being sold through that particular interface as they effect your avatar instead of your ship, kind-of, sort-of. I have two problems with the Noble Exchange as it exists at present.
1) Aurum. Bringing in a new currency is something I can live with. It's unwieldy and isn't the greatest when it come to ease of user experience, but if that's something you want to go for? okay. My problem is actually a matter of immersion. CCP seems to be championing Incarna as an aspect of the game's exploration of the world of New Eden. This is something I was actually very much looking forward to. I've read many of the chronicles. I enjoyed the little tech stories that explain how certain game behaviors have become part of the universe, like the Camera drones or the Jumpgates and FTL systems. Hell, I even made a twitter account for myself that beams all the in-game news to my phone. I'm not a role-player but I like the idea of diving into the universe a great deal.
The reason why the current Aurum system break this immersion is, as many have pointed out, the conversion between PLEX and Aurum. The math has been done before 1 PLEX = 3500 AUR = 300M ISK = $15. I'm okay with a Hulk costing the equivalent of $7.50. I'm okay with a Moros costing the equivalent of $120 or so. This makes sense to me. What pulls me out of the in-universe immersion is the fact that the dreaded monocle costs $80 almost 11 times as much as a Hulk. This makes absolutely no sense within the universe. (I won't discuss how much sense it makes out of universe here).
2) These conversion rates reek of an attempt to squeeze cash out of us. As was actually mentioned by the new forum favorite, John Turbefield (I'm paraphrasing), we don't want to feel like we're paying a subscription twice. I understand that we can convert ISK into plex and plex into Aurum, but at the prices that items are currently at, a Shirt is the price of 4 hulks (or some such number). Again, this pulls me out of the immersion like someone yelling on their cellphone at the theatre.

Captain's Quarters: There's a lot of talk about disappointment as to the amount of content. I don't go along with it. I'm actually pleased to see "tangible" results of your efforts. I'm okay with not being able to walk around stations at this point. I understand its a lot of work. I'm glad to have gotten something after all this time. Waiting longer for full walking in stations would've been fine, but its six of one half a dozen of the other.
What's actually frustrating me is something that CCP Fallout spoke briefly about. Hardware. There is a lot of frustration going around about how demanding the CQ is, and I agree. my computer is 3 years old. I simply don't have the money to buy and replace my computer every year just to keep up with the cutting edge of what you make. I'm glad you're advancing as rapidly as you are, but many of us feel left in the dust by it. My primary fear regarding this is that if in the next 4 months I replace my computer with something that can handle CQ sufficiently and be within my budget, I'll have to throw it out in a year because the number of avatars walking around in stations is going to kill that year-old graphics card in a ball of fire. Basically you're making my either spend $1200 on a super rig every 4 years or $300 on an okay rig every year. I don't like how it feels that you are forcing me to do this.
I think what would be interesting is to see things done through the LP store. You want an Amarr Navy Uniform? Have LP (and perhaps aurum) and sufficient standings with the Amarr Navy. The monocle could be through some Cybernetics Manufacturer. ____ "There was a time in the evolution of all things that work, when it didn't" http://www.robinomicon.com |

Were it not for the fact that the CQ is raping my video card (see the sig for my explination) I would agree. I still prefer the Dock + Disembark button. ____ "There was a time in the evolution of all things that work, when it didn't" Thoughts on Incarna |

From my understanding, this is basically the same thing. You start with the station view exactly as it used to be, but with an extra station button that will load the new Captains Quarters and "pan back" from a video screen.

Yes, but wasn't it he who stated last year that it would never exist in the first place?
I THINK that was soundwave, not manifest - but I could be wrong. I don't feel like going back over the threadnaught. Nonetheless CCP as an entity said this. ____ "There was a time in the evolution of all things that work, when it didn't" Thoughts on Incarna |

I don't give a f**ck about vanity items, I'm more worried about the Power advantages they mentioned.
I don't like the idea of Aurum, but if it must absolutely stay then I am with you completely. Like I said, I'd rather see Amarr Navy Uniforms bought with Amarr Navy LP. It was CCP Shadow - he replied here a few months later.
His excuse is that he basically said "there won't be" when all he really could have said with certainty would have been "I am unaware of any plans".

Note how less than one year ago most posters were like "microtransactions no way" and now the prevailing attitude is "microtransactions for vanity items only is ok".
As long as you behave like that CCP won't change...
My main issue with the AUR system is not the concept of it... it works in OTHER games. It's the whole idea of adding yet another step to THIS GAME's currency transactions that is completely superfluous.
MT or Subscriptions. Not both.
Like I said earlier (not that I imagine any sane person can keep up): My ideal would be to ditch Aurum as a whole. ____ "There was a time in the evolution of all things that work, when it didn't" Thoughts on Incarna |

I am not attacking both of your personal opinions (at least that's not my intention) - my point is that going by the past development CCP's "our players are unhappy because we have changed too much too fast" approach may be justified.
Maybe it is really the speed of the changes that is CCP's problem and not the content of the changes as such - maybe acceptance of more "invasive" items/services purchased through microtranscations will indeed rise if you give players a few months to accept a new anchor for their expectations.
You can of course argue that this time is different because people actually cancel their accounts (which leaves little room for changing their mind about MTs) - but how many of these will continue to play with PLEX, how many will renew their subscription before their remaining gametime runs out? we simply don't know.
I am probably too bitter about the EVE community but I was extremely disappointed by its acceptance of destroyable PLEX - allowing a company to charge without providing any service in return is just dumb.
You may have a point. The speed and suddenness of these changes may have added gas to the embers and erupted into a fireball. That's generally speaking.
For myself, I don't think that's the case, for me. I tend to soak it in after a few weeks, and generally I'm content after that. I think that I'm this vocal about it so soon speaks as the the, um, abrasion I feel.
Still - valid point. ____ "There was a time in the evolution of all things that work, when it didn't" Thoughts on Incarna |

CCP wouldn't be banning folks left and right if they actually planned on making changes. This is pure spin control, and until they answer the basic question, it's not getting better.

And it all breaks down so simply. They drew a line in the sand; then they openly discussed crossing it. They decided to hop on a bandwagon, but they didn't look around to check how high it was or what shape it was.
It goes beyond communication. It's fundamental perception of reality stuff. CCP doesn't ask us because they know the way they have chosen to pretend to believe things are isn't real. They aren't addressing the fact they've lied to us, directly, because to do so would mean admitting their perception of reality is incorrect.
It has become a standby that they no longer understand their game, a tired, almost hackneyed, statement. But never would I have thought it so blatantly demonstrated.
And assuming that leaked email is not faked (and let's be honest, it explains SOOO much if it's true) it really points to a total disconnect between CCP's corporate level and her player base. It also points to a total and absolute lack of respect towards her player base.
No one says You may quit, but you'll come back if they were actually worried Eve's player's could break the addiction cycle.
